Wood-Fired Pizza in Seongsu: The One with the Black Dough
Seongsu has no shortage of trendy restaurants, but izza (이짜) earns its spot on the shortlist for a reason that's actually visual: the dough is jet black. Not gimmick black. Legitimately, made-with-edible-bamboo-charcoal-powder black. Once you see it come out of the wood-fired oven, you'll understand why people make the detour.
What to Expect
Izza runs two parallel menus. "Pizza" covers the classic white-dough lineup. "Izza" is their signature line — same wood-fired oven, but the dough is charcoal black and slightly earthier in flavor. Think of it like a sourdough with more character. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the pizzas go in and out of the oven from your seat, which is genuinely satisfying.
It's not a huge space. The lighting at dinner is dim — romantic if that's your thing, slightly annoying if you want to photograph your food properly. Portions are modest, in the way that good Italian-style pizza tends to be. Plan to order more than one dish between two people.
Prices run 18,000–29,000 KRW per pizza, which is reasonable for Seongsu and very reasonable for wood-fired at this quality level.
What to Order
Prawn pizza — Black tiger shrimp on the charcoal dough. This is the one locals point to when someone asks for a recommendation. The contrast between the charcoal crust and the seafood topping actually makes sense flavor-wise, not just visually.
Izza Truffle & Kombu — Truffle and kombu (kelp) sounds like a weird pairing on paper but it works. Umami stacked on umami, held together by the smoky base from the wood fire. If you're going to try one "Izza" line pizza, make it this one.
Anchovy pasta — Several regulars order this as a companion dish rather than an afterthought. It has a Korean-Italian fusion quality to it — familiar enough, but with something slightly different in the seasoning that makes it interesting. Worth ordering alongside the pizza rather than instead of it.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Dinner service skews couple-heavy. The dim lighting and open kitchen give it a date-night energy that's not accidental. If you're coming with a group of four or more, it works fine — just book ahead because the space fills up quickly and they're not casual about walk-ins during peak hours.
Lunch is a different mood entirely — brighter, more relaxed, easier to get a table. If you're not on a romantic schedule, the afternoon slot is genuinely the better experience.
One thing worth knowing: pizza from a wood-fired oven drops off fast once it cools. Eat it immediately. Don't wait for the perfect photo. The photo will still be good at 30 seconds out of the oven. The pizza will not be as good at five minutes.

What People Are Saying
"We went without a reservation and they accommodated us for 1.5 hours on a Friday evening! How is that for service. That is already a 5-star for me. It was also my first time there and we ordered a set for two - pizza, pasta, salad, dessert. The total was just below 70k won. Food was good. I think we had a truffle pasta, margherita pizza, and sweet potato and ice cream. I only gave 4 stars for the atmosphere because it was too dark for my liking."
"Delicious! This place serves amazing wood-fired pizza! There were two of us, and we ordered three dishes — the portions were just right. The restroom is located inside and was very clean. The music was great too, which made it a nice spot for a date. It’s a great place to relax. Although it’s a bit of a walk from the nearest station, the neighborhood is quiet and pleasant to stroll through."
"Tucked away from the bustling crowds of Seongsu-dong, this spot sits in a quieter area with noticeably less foot traffic. The pizza is modest in both size and flavor—nothing particularly memorable. However, the pasta stood out with its unique Korean-Italian fusion, offering an interesting twist. Overall, it was a good experience, though not quite an outstanding one."
