Straw-Fired Short Ribs in Yongsan: Why Mongtan Has a Two-Hour Queue Every Single Day

If you ask a Seoul local where to eat galbi right now, Mongtan (몽탄) will come up within the first three answers. It's not hype for the sake of it. There's a real reason people stand outside in the cold for two hours — and it starts with fire.

What to Expect

The building itself sets the mood before you even sit down. Mongtan is housed in a restored Japanese colonial-era wooden building over 100 years old, which gives it a warmth and weight that modern Korean BBQ restaurants simply don't have. You're not sitting under fluorescent lights next to a ventilation hood. The space feels lived-in, quiet in the right way, slightly dim.

The concept is simple: beef or pork short ribs, pre-cooked over straw flame in the kitchen, then finished at your table. That straw-smoke flavor — slightly sweet, deeply charred — is what makes this place different from your standard Korean BBQ joint. The meat arrives already kissed by fire. You're not doing much of the work yourself. It's short rib (galbi), which if you haven't had it before, means bone-in beef with fat marbled through generous, thick-cut slabs. Think of it as the Korean answer to prime rib, but smokier and eaten in wraps with rice and banchan.

One thing worth knowing upfront: there are only two protein options (beef or pork), minimum two portions per order. This keeps the kitchen fast and the quality consistent. Don't come hoping for variety — come for the one thing they do exceptionally well.

What to Order

U-Dae Galbi (beef short rib) — This is why you're here. Get the beef. The straw-fire fragrance comes through properly and the meat is tender without being soft in that unsatisfying way. Some cuts will have more gristle than others; that's just the nature of short rib. Order at least two portions between two people.

Truffle steamed egg (gyeran-jjim) — This sounds like a gimmick but it genuinely works. The egg custard arrives in a stone pot, bubbling at the edges, heavy with truffle. It's rich enough to function as a side dish and a palate reset between bites of meat. A lot of tables order this.

Fried rice — Towards the end of the meal, get it. The consensus from regulars is that it's worth the extra order. Good send-off to the meal.

Also: the frozen radish kimchi (banchan) that comes out as a side is unexpectedly good. Cold, crunchy, slightly sweet. It cuts through the fat in exactly the right way.

Atmosphere & Vibe

Old building, considered interior, not precious about it. The crowd skews Korean but plenty of tourists find their way here now — the staff handles English well enough to get your order sorted without stress. It's a sit-down, take-your-time kind of meal. Not a place you rush through.

The one honest downside: the wait. Walk-ins only, no reservations. On weekends, two hours is realistic. Even on a slow rainy Tuesday afternoon, expect to wait over an hour. They operate a numbered waitlist system — you take a number, leave, and come back when you're close. Use that time to walk around Samgakji or grab a coffee nearby. Don't just stand there.

Best time to walk in: Weekday lunch, right when they open at noon. Your best shot at a short wait or none at all.

What People Are Saying

"Came for Mongtan’s legendary U-Dae Galbi (beef short rib) and really enjoyed it. The meat was tender, fragrant, and flavorful, cooked sizzling hot at the table. There was a great variety of banchan, especially the frozen radish. We also ordered the truffle-infused steamed egg, which was rich and generous with truffle. Tip: Go early. We arrived at 4:15pm and walked straight in. By the time we left, a queue had built up — waits can be up to 2 hours. Would definitely come back again."

"Super popular straw grill spot. We arrived at 1:30pm on a cold rainy Tuesday and there were 24 groups before us. Took about 1hr wait, and when we left at 4pm, the queue was even longer 🤣 only 2 choices of beef or pork, minimum 2 portion order, we chose beef with a truffle steam egg, bean stew and fried rice. The beef is really the highlight and deserves the popularity as the straw smokey smell really comes through. The panchan also goes along super well with the meat. We got into a food coma from eating so much 🤣 service is efficient, good english. Recommend!"

"Too much gristle in the beef ribs. Meat is from the US. Overrated & overhyped. Would not recommend. Waited 4 hours, probably due to the golden week holiday in Seoul. Tasty but not worth the wait. The gristle in the meat ruined the experience as well. They don’t take reservations, walk-in and take a no. to join the waitlist. We left and came back based on how fast the waitlist was clearing. Definitely not going back."
