The Thai Restaurant in Gangnam That Koreans Actually Book Weeks in Advance

If you're in Gangnam and craving Thai food that tastes like it was made by someone who actually lived in Thailand — this is it. Ban Pichai (반피차이) sits inside Nonhyeon Market and quietly outperforms most of the Thai restaurants in Seoul.

What to Expect

The name means "big brother's place" in Thai, which tells you something about the vibe. This isn't a glossy fusion concept. The chef trained in Chiang Mai, ingredients are sourced directly from Thailand, and you can taste the difference in the broth. If you've had watered-down tom yum at a Thai chain, prepare to recalibrate.

The space is small — rattan furniture, warm wood, a terrace out front that gives you just enough Bangkok-local-restaurant energy. It's dark inside, tables are close together, and the room fills up fast. Nobody's coming here for the square footage.

What to Order

Tom Yum Goong (tom yum goong) is the signature and the reason regulars come back. The broth is sharp, sour, and properly aromatic — not the pale orange version you get at most Seoul Thai spots. Add noodles. Seriously, add the noodles. That combo is the most-ordered thing on the table and it earns it.

Pu Pad Pong Curry (poo pad pong curry) — crab stir-fried in yellow curry — is the other standout. It's rich and savory with a mild heat, and it pairs well with rice. Multiple reviewers have called it the best version they've had in Seoul, and based on the consistency of that opinion, it's not an accident.

Pad Thai is solid. Good-sized shrimp, the right texture on the noodles, spice on the side so you control the heat. It won't blow your mind but it won't disappoint either. If you want something fresher alongside, the papaya salad (som tam) is bright and properly sour.

One note: they use a lot of cilantro. If you're sensitive to it, tell the server upfront. They're accommodating about it.

Atmosphere & Vibe

This is a date spot and a small-group dinner spot. The terrace is the best seat in the house — grab it if you can. Evenings are lively; they've added wine pairings to the menu, which sounds odd for Thai food but actually works well with the richer curry dishes. Lunch is calmer, slightly more utilitarian. The crowd skews Korean office workers at lunch, couples and small groups at dinner. It's been featured on Korean food TV (Suyo Sikdorak) and has a Blue Ribbon award, so locals know about it. The walk-in situation reflects that.

What People Are Saying

"This Thai restaurant in Nonhyeon Market was honestly better than some of the food I had in Thailand! If you’re in Gangnam, it’s definitely worth a visit. The pu pad pong curry, tom yum goong, and pad thai were all amazing. I’ve been staying in Korea for a while now, and this place has become a great spot for dinner—especially with wine in the evenings. They even added new dishes that pair well with wine, and they’re really delicious. Highly recommend!"

"I’ve been to lots of thai food places and this is the best! Best Tomyum and Somtam ever. Friendly service and good food. Will definitely visit again."

"One of the best pat thai in Seoul! Nice size of shrimp, little bit spices aside for you to mix. It was well reasoned. The papaya salad was quite nice as well. Would love to visit again but Thai food in Seoul is too pricey. The inside is rather dark. The tables are tight. Want to try their lunch specials (noodle soup)."
