Spicy Octopus & Pork Belly in Gangnam: Idaepaljjuggumi Is the Real Deal
There are places in Seoul where locals actually wait in line — not because of hype, but because the food earns it. Idaepaljjuggumi (이대팔쭈꾸미) in Nonhyeon-dong is one of them.
What to Expect
Jjukkumi is small octopus — not the giant kind you might be picturing. Think tender, slightly chewy, and deeply savory when stir-fried in a gochujang-based sauce. It's closer in spirit to spicy shrimp stir-fry than anything intimidating. The signature move here is pairing it with samgyeopsal (pork belly) on a tabletop grill, so you get fatty, smoky pork cutting through the heat. It's a combination that makes a lot of sense after the first bite.
The space itself is lived-in. Not polished, not Instagram-perfect — more like the kind of place that's been feeding the neighborhood for years and knows it doesn't need to redecorate. That's not a complaint. It has the energy of a late-night pojangmacha (Korean street food tent), which makes it genuinely fun, especially with a group.
One honest note: at least one review mentions the owner can be brusque with foreign customers. It's worth knowing going in. Don't let it put you off — the food is the point, and you won't be the first tourist to figure it out.
What to Order
Pork belly and octopus combo (samgyeopsal jjukkumi) — This is what almost every table gets. The octopus comes loaded with bean sprouts, which wilt down as it cooks, so don't be alarmed when it looks like a mountain at first. Eat it wrapped in perilla leaves with the radish salad on the side — that wrap is the move.
Cheese egg custard (치즈계란찜) — This shows up on nearly every table for a reason. It's silky steamed egg with melted cheese on top, rich and mild, and it does exactly what you need it to do: takes the edge off the spice. Order it. Don't skip it.
Fried rice to finish — Portions lean moderate, so if you're hungry, close out with fried rice cooked in the leftover sauce on the grill. It picks up all the flavor from what came before it.
Spice Level — Read This Before You Order
Level 1 is roughly Shin Ramyun — genuinely manageable for most people, including spice beginners. Level 2 jumps to Buldak territory (the fiery Korean instant noodle that has its own challenge videos). Levels 3 and 4 are for people who find that fun. For a first visit, start at level 1. It's not boring — it has real heat, just not punishing heat.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Casual and loud in the best way. This is a dinner-with-soju kind of place, not a date-night spot. Good for groups of three or four. The wait can be real — especially on weekday evenings — so either come right at 11:30 AM for lunch or aim for early dinner before 6 PM.

If you're nervous about the spice, just tell them level 1 when you order — you'll still get the full experience without suffering. And don't leave without doing at least one wrap with the perilla leaf, radish salad, and a piece of pork belly together. That bite is the whole point.

What People Are Saying
"There is so long line and the owner doesn’t care about foreigner. This place may give you a bad impression of Gangnam. I’ll never visit again."
"If you want to experience the real Korean spiciness, this is the place to go. Level 1 is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, and levels 2 and above are a bit spicier than Buldak Bokkeum Myeon. Levels 3 and 4 are a bit harder to describe. But it's delicious. As expected from a spicy restaurant, the side dishes include radish wraps, salad, and nurungji stew to help alleviate the spiciness. You can also order steamed eggs and rice balls. First off, it's delicious. This is a restaurant where you'll often have to wait in line. However, the interior is a bit untidy. However, it has the feel of a traditional pojangmacha (traditional Korean food stall) and is a great pairing with drinks. The samgyeopsal jjukkumi (steamed octopus with pork belly) is particularly popular."
"Yes~~~~ This place has been famous for a long time, so I've been meaning to go there for a while, and finally did. The menu has a huge variety of combinations, but I ordered the pork belly and octopus (almost every table ordered the pork belly and cheese egg custard). They put a lot of bean sprouts on it and the octopus is filling. The bean sprouts wilt quickly as they cook, so it doesn't feel like a lot. The spiciness is about twice that of Shin Ramyun, and it's decent. It's not particularly spicy or truly delicious, but it's not lacking or dull. The cheese and egg custard are also slightly rich and savory, which nicely balances out the spiciness. The portions aren't that large, so ordering fried rice is fine. The best part was eating it wrapped in perilla leaves, angel hairs, and radish salad. The curry sauce was just okay. It didn't feel like it went well. If I were in the area, I'd definitely go back."
