Real Korean BBQ in Gangnam — Where Local Office Workers Actually Go After Work

Gangnam gets a bad reputation for being expensive and tourist-facing. Gwanggaeto Jeongyugsigdang (광개토 정육식당) is neither. This is a proper jeongyugsigdang — a butcher-restaurant hybrid — tucked into the Yeongdong Market alley near Sinnonhyeon, and the locals who pack it out on weeknights are not here for the ambiance.

What to Expect

A jeongyugsigdang works like this: the meat comes straight from the butcher counter, cut fresh, and a staff member grills it at your table for you. That last part matters more than it sounds. No awkward hovering over the grill, no accidentally burning your samgyeopsal, no rookie anxiety. You just eat.

Pork belly (samgyeopsal) and pork collar (moksal) run 14,000 won per portion — genuinely reasonable for Gangnam, where similar cuts easily cost 18,000–22,000 won. The freshness is noticeable. Good Korean BBQ pork should be tender with a slight chew, fatty without being greasy, and here it hits both marks.

The dish that actually sets this place apart is the yukjeol (raw beef + spicy chewy noodles, 11,000 won). If you've never had yukhoe — Korean-style seasoned raw beef — don't let the word "raw" put you off before you've thought about it. Think beef tartare, but looser, sweeter, with sesame oil and Asian pear threading through it. The yukjeol takes that and combines it with cold, springy jjolmyeon noodles in a gochujang-based sauce. Chewy, sweet, spicy, cold. It's a genuinely odd combination the first time you encounter it, and then you immediately understand why people order it.

What to Order

Pork belly or pork collar (samgyeopsal / moksal) — 14,000 won. Get at least two portions between two people. The staff grill it for you; just wrap it in the lettuce leaves they bring out, add a smear of fermented shrimp paste or garlic, and eat in one bite if you can manage it.

Yukjeol (yukjeol) — 11,000 won. Order this as a starter while the grill heats up. A reviewer specifically flagged the sauce as the standout — it coats everything without overpowering. Don't skip it.

Chadolbaegi — thinly sliced beef brisket that cooks in about 30 seconds on a hot grill. One reviewer came in planning to only order the yukhoe and got nudged by the staff toward the chadolbaegi. Their words: "it turned out to be a good choice." Take the hint.

Atmosphere & Vibe

It's a market-alley restaurant, so the space is functional rather than pretty. Loud on busy evenings, the kind of noise that comes from a room full of people who are genuinely enjoying themselves rather than performing it. This is a Gangnam office worker staple — Thursday and Friday evenings, expect a wait. The crowd is mostly Korean, which is always a reliable signal.

Service is direct and attentive. Staff will grill for you and keep things moving. Don't expect elaborate explanations of the menu, but do expect efficient, friendly help if you point at something.

One Last Thing

If you're coming on a Friday evening, either reserve a table or arrive right when they open at 4 PM — the wait after 6:30 PM can stretch long. Coming mid-week gives you a calmer room and more attentive service, and the meat quality doesn't change.

What People Are Saying

"Best BBQ restaurant I have ever been!"

"The yukhoe was chewy and sweet, and the sauce was delicious! The meat in the chadolbagi was also sweet, and went perfectly with the kimchi and chamisul! I originally planned to just eat the yukhoe and go home, but the waiter pressured me by asking, "Aren't you going to grill the meat?" so I ordered the chadolbagi instead, and it turned out to be a good choice. The rest of the service was also very pleasant, and I had a great time eating!"

"Staying at the Dormy Inn in Jiangnan, of course I had to find a BBQ restaurant within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. I chose this place because they offer both pork and beef, the meat is fresh and reasonably priced, the service is good, and I didn't have to grill it myself 👍 It was a lively weekend, and there were 3 or 4 free parking spaces in front of the main entrance. Taste ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Environment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"
