Knife-Cut Noodles in Myeongdong Worth the Line — Ranju Kalmyeon (란주칼면)
Myeongdong is full of tourist traps dressed up in neon. Ranju Kalmyeon is not one of them. It's been doing one thing extremely well for years — dosamyeon, a Shanxi-style Chinese knife-cut noodle that has nothing to do with the ramyeon you've been eating all trip.
What to Expect
Dosamyeon (knife-cut noodles) are made by shaving dough directly off a block with a blade — each piece comes out thick in the middle, thin at the edges, with a satisfying chew that regular noodles just don't have. Think of it like a chunkier, more irregular version of Italian pappardelle, but with more bite. The texture is the whole point. Once you try it, regular noodle soups feel a little flat by comparison.
The menu sits mostly in the low-to-mid 10,000-won range — generous for a spot this close to Myeongdong Station. Ranju Kalmyeon was featured on the Korean TV show Saenghwal-ui Dalин (roughly: "Masters of Daily Life") as a dosamyeon master, and a popular YouTube food show added more fuel to the fire. That's why the line exists. It's earned.
What to Order
Stir-fried seafood knife-cut noodles (haemul bokkeum dosamyeon) — this is the crowd favorite. The sauce is savory and slightly sticky, coating every uneven edge of those thick noodles. Not blow-your-head-off spicy, more of a medium kick.
Spicy seafood broth knife-cut noodles (samson haemul jjamppong dosamyeon) — if you want something soupy, get this. The broth is clean but sharp, that classic Korean-Chinese jjamppong heat that builds slowly. Several regulars swear by it. Fair warning: one reviewer called their bowl "deadly spicy," so pace yourself if your spice tolerance is low.
Sweet and sour pork (tangsuyuk) — worth getting if you're with a group. Crispy, chewy pork with a sweet-spicy sauce. It's a solid version of a dish that's easy to mess up.
Skip the plain versions of anything if you can handle spice. The spiced-up dishes are where this kitchen shines.
Atmosphere & Vibe
It's not a relaxing dinner spot. Small tables, constant turnover, the kitchen is visible and loud. Seating happens fast once you're in, but the wait to get in is the actual challenge — expect to queue outside, then queue again inside on chairs before a table opens. During peak hours, 25-minute waits after ordering aren't unusual either. Come hungry and patient.
The crowd skews local Korean and Chinese visitors, which tells you something about authenticity. This isn't a restaurant that softened its flavors for tourist palates.

What People Are Saying
"Very busy restaurant, always a line up outside, people waiting to be sited. We was very curious to taste the food,so we line up too (around 6pm). The outside waiting was not that long, after we go inside and we still in line on the chairs waiting for empty table. After we order and go to the table,we have wait about 25 min. for our food. My husband was very happy with his seafood soup with sliced noodle. He said was deadly spicy.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I had the sliced noodle with stir-fried seafood. It was mid spicy, not much seafood,so i was not that happy."
"삼선짜장면 was so so good — packed with fresh, delicious seafood and the noodles are real 도삭면 (knife-cut style). Honestly, compared to the price it deserves 20 stars. I finished everything and already planning to bring my daughter next time. Only downside is the long wait line, but seeing so many Chinese customers here just proves how authentic and good it really is. Definitely worth it, will go again!"
"Love these knife sliced noodle! It’s a fusion of Chinese and Korean cuisine. They have thicker noodles and these noodles are more chewy and fun to eat. We had 2 different noodles and both were absolutely delicious. Sichuan style sweet and sour pork was also really good, crispy and chewy deep fried pork with sweet and spicy sauce. If you can’t tolerate spicy, probably better not to choose this though."
