Good For
A Joseon-Era Apothecary Turned Specialty Coffee Bar in Euljiro, Seoul
If you're doing the Myeongdong-Euljiro loop and need a place to sit down that isn't a chain, this is it. Coffee Hanyakbang (커피한약방) is one of those spots that earns its reputation on atmosphere alone — but the drinks are genuinely good enough that you won't feel like you paid for vibes.
What to Expect
The name translates roughly to "Coffee Herb Medicine Shop," and they're not joking around. Walk through a gap in the alley that's barely a meter wide — yes, it looks like you're going the wrong way — and you'll step into a space designed to look like a Joseon-dynasty apothecary. Mother-of-pearl furniture, rotary phones, dark wood floors, low lighting. It's theatrical without being tacky.
There's actually history behind the design: this location sits on the former site of Hyeminseo, a royal medical institution from the Joseon era associated with the physician Heo Jun. The cafe leans into that story, and it works. First floor is moody and atmospheric. If it's packed — and it often is around lunch — head upstairs, there's more seating on the second floor.
What to Order
Hand-drip coffee with your bean of choice. This is the main event. The beans are hand-roasted in-house and you pick your origin when you order. If you lean toward lighter, more floral roasts, say so — there are options. The house blend runs on the darker, slightly bitter side, which some people love and others don't. Know your preference before you walk up to the counter.
Traditional drink bases (omija, sujeonggwa). If coffee isn't your thing, they do drinks built on Korean herbal and fruit bases — omija (a tart, five-flavor berry) and sujeonggwa (cinnamon-ginger punch). These aren't afterthoughts. They're worth ordering on their own merits, especially if you want something distinctly Korean to drink in a distinctly Korean space.
Dessert from Hyemindang across the alley. Coffee Hanyakbang doesn't do food, but their sister cafe Hyemindang is literally across the narrow alley. Lots of regulars grab something there and bring it over. It's accepted, it's practical, and the pairing works well.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Dim, deliberate, a little cinematic. This is not a bright laptop-friendly workspace. It's a place where people actually talk to each other, or sit quietly with a drink and look around. The staff are calm and efficient. It gets busy but doesn't feel chaotic.
One honest caveat: if you're coming specifically for the espresso-based drinks, the drip coffee is clearly where the care goes. A flat white here might disappoint if you have strong opinions about extraction. Stick to the drip, or go traditional.

Before You Go
Use Naver Maps over Google Maps to find the entrance — the alley is narrow enough that some mapping apps drop you in the wrong spot. Search "커피한약방" in Naver and follow the walking route. You'll find it faster, and you won't stand at the wrong doorway looking confused like most first-timers do.

What People Are Saying
"5 star overall because of the decor, style, set up and general vibe. The food is also really good. The coffee is th weakest part, the flat white was a little bitter. They have a wide selection of bean for drip, I'd recommend offering a lighter roast for their house blend as well. If they did that then I'd have no complaints!"
"Old, romantic, classic, cozy vibes. Excellent coffee, cakes and much more. Please, explore this place. It's so unique and magnificent. Staff very friendly, I would diffendtly come back here again and again."
"Located near the SKT Tower, the antique atmosphere here is truly unique. It pairs perfectly with desserts from Hyemindang right across the alley. It can get a bit busy during lunch, but there's plenty of seating on the 2nd floor. Although it's tucked away in an alley, it's surprisingly easy to find."
